Day 131a: A most serendipitous Stopover … (September 07, 2019)

I once again woke extremely early and headed back out onto the pre-dawn Road. I headed past the luxurious-looking Steeles Tavern Manor – and then eventually into and through the town of Fairfield – and then ever onward still; into what looked to be another one of those regions of the country that was seemingly devoid of all civilization, a region with no houses or hamlets or restaurants or rest-stops of any kind. And this had become somewhat of a problem for me, seeing as how it was quite clear at that time that I really need to go to the bathroom. Now having to “Go” in the woods or the wilderness had admittedly been one of my greatest concerns before I set out on this Great Walk, and up to this point I had been happily surprised to learn that this fear – like so many of our life’s varied fears & worries – was completely unfounded. There simply had always happened to be a restroom of one sort or another nearby whenever I needed one as I had walked along. And yet on this particular morning on the far outskirts of Fairfield this was clearly not the case, and I started to look for a place – anyplace at all – where I might discreetly “do my business” by the roadside. And then I suddenly rounded a smooth bend and saw the local elementary school, and then I looked across its empty parking lot and saw a brand new bright blue Porta Potty – just sitting there all alone, right “in the middle of nowhere”, as if it had just been waiting for me to quite gratefully arrive …

Shallow beings believe in luck or in circumstance. Potent beings understand cause and effect … In truth, the most vital lives are all about action. We can’t feel warmth unless we create it, we can’t feel delight until we care, and we can’t know surprising good fortune unless we leap forth and take the risk … Life is nothing but a series of serendipities, really, a series of regular, subtly beneficial happenstances with no beginnings and no ends. And such a myriad of possibilities therein, those interactions, through which our Love might well transcend.” ~ inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Joan Erickson & Ana Claudia Antunes
