Day 094c: Delving into the Divine … (July 17, 2019)

I am no scientist, and yet I can choose to explore my community nonetheless. An infant who has just learned to hold up his head has a frank and forthright way of gazing about him in untainted bewilderment. He hasn’t the faintest clue where he is, and yet he adores it all just the same. Of course a couple of years thereafter he will have learned many things – things that in no way adequately describe the miraculous nature of his being or his surroundings, and yet things that will have him emit the cocksure air of a squatter who has come to feel he somehow owns his particular place. It is this same unwonted, taught pride that diverts us from our original calling, a divine summons to explore our neighborhoods resolutely & bravely, to meet all others in gentle humility, to view life’s scintillating landscapes with astounded amazement, to more fully discover at least where it is that we have all been so startlingly set down, even if we can’t ever for certain know why.” ~ via Annie Dillard
