Day 141g: To rediscover the Calling … (September 17, 2019)
I eventually made it into the town of Mount Carmel, where I stopped into the local Hardee’s for yet another cool drink of tap water. I was sitting at one of its tables and feeling pretty whipped by the whole affair at this point (a feeling that had tended to resurface briefly every now & then along this Walk), when an elderly couple sat down next to me and allowed me to witness with surprising vigor about the nature & meaning of our shared Way. I guess our calling is found in whatever serves others – and our Calling is known in whatever we can keep on fluidly doing for others even when feeling despondent &/or exhausted …
“If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything … And so I remember in this moment to never form my conscience to fit the instant’s fashions … Let us prefer to be true to ourselves instead, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule or denouncement of any & all nearby, rather than to be false to our greater Self and its higher Summons, and thereby incur our own deserved abhorrence … None of us are bound to win, and yet we are all bound to be resolute. None of us are bound to succeed, and yet we are all bound to live up to the Light we have all been given.” ~ inspired by Gordon Eadie, Lillian Hellman, Frederick Douglas & Abraham Lincoln
