“In what terms should we think of these beings, nonhuman yet possessing many human-like characteristics and the very same self-awareness & capacity for fear & suffering? How should we truly treat them? Surely we should treat them with the very same consideration and the very same kindness that we show to other humans, yes? And as we correctly recognize several fundamental inalienable human rights, so too should we recognize the rights of all our sentient cousins, yes? Yes indeed, we should! … It’s actually all quite simple: if you yourself don’t want to be imprisoned or enslaved or beaten or abused or mutilated or murdered, then you cannot fairly condone anything similar that is being done towards any other sentient life, and this whether those others happen to be human or not … Yes, every being is born to ultimately die, and yet no being should ever be born to be abused or tortured or killed. Similarly, every being is equally called to a life of freedom, and as such no being should ever be in any way enslaved or confined or shackled.” ~ inspired by Jane Goodall, Moby & Patty Shenker
