Day 123f: As the Way unfolds with Time … (August 30, 2019)

Part of what makes roads, trails and paths so unique is that they cannot be perceived as a whole by any sedentary onlooker. Instead, they unfold in time as one travels along them, just as a story does as one listens or reads. And on these journeys, hairpin turns are like plot twists, steep ascents become escalations of suspense to the wondrous views preferred by each new summit, forks in the road morph into introductions of new plot threads, and arrivals form the ends of each scintillating story. Just as writing allows one to read the words of someone who is absent, so too roads make it possible to trace the route of all travelers previous. Roads are a record of those who have gone before us and to follow them is to walk alongside the bold adventures of those who are no longer there. In this sense roads are means to ends ever greater than their own – they are expansions of awareness, expansions of self, expansions of purpose, and expansions of life … Roads, like life, expand we round each new bend – like love, that expands every time we offer it anew.” ~ inspired by Rebecca Solnit & Kamand Kojouri
