Day 110e: Solace at the Skylark … (August 17, 2019)

I eventually made it to the outskirts of the town of Edison, and thankfully left the frenetically crazed thoroughfare in favor of the cooler and much calmer confines of the Skylark Diner. Not wanting to intrude upon the more joyous and carefree ambience inside, I asked for a water to go and then parked myself on a bench just outside the restaurant. After resting there for a few minutes I was just getting ready to walk onward when Debbie & Diane noticed my smock, asked about the same, heard about my Walk, and then promptly offered to treat me to a fine vegan breakfast of fruit-topped pancakes and coffee (!!!) …

I wanted to be alone and to forge my own path, and yet I knew that no path is ever truly solitary, that we all steadily tread across others’ beginnings and ends … I remembered in that moment that the destination is never the journey. Rather, the destination is every person you met along the way.” ~ via Ma Jian & Shannon Alder
