Day 069n: How to spin the Globe … (June 22, 2019)
“Were the Earth as smooth as a ball bearing, it might be beautiful seen from another planet, as the rings of Saturn are. And yet here we live and move on a far different sphere; wandering down the banks of a winding creek, riding an undulating railway through a mountain pass, strolling along a trail that is at once open and airy and then suddenly lush and enclosed. The landscape of our great Home is every shifting. And how fortunate we are that this is indeed the case. For were our Earth smooth, our brains would become smooth as well. We would wake, blink, walk two steps, get the whole picture, and then lapse into dreamless meanderings. And yet because we are living people – and because we are on the receiving end of an ever-scintillating beauty, another element always enters the question. The texture of our varying space becomes a condition of our flowing time. And so what I want to do is add texture to my life’s time, painting the landscape with my presence; walking along an unrolling scroll; and thereby set ting my giant globe spinning on it stand.” ~ Annie Dillard
