Misleading Myth #16: “But I’m already a vegetarian” … (07/19/14)
Well, as it turns out, I am more sympathetic to this particular argument than most others, if for no other reason than I myself was an “ethical vegetarian” (an oxymoron, of course, although one unbeknownst to me at the time) for over nine years before going vegan last year. I too was not aware of the sordid Truths that the milk industry had purposefully hidden from me (and from all of you as well) for the last 4+ decades of my life.
And the most insidious of these hidden Truths is the following … namely, that THERE IS NO MILK INDUSTRY at all!
That’s right … When all is said and done, what we have been taught is the “milk industry” is nothing more than an arm of the meat industry. Indeed — and in deed — they are actually one and the same.
In fact, when we break down what happens to the average milk cow used to produce over 99% of the milk currently on the market, it turns out that she suffers FAR MORE than any of her “raised solely for meat” cousins.
Consider the following facts:
*Dairy cows, like meat cows, are confined for the entirety of the shortened lives in disgusting conditions. Unlike meat cows, dairy cows suffer the additional torture of being repeatedly raped (or “artificially inseminated” according to the industry — a process whereby the cow is tied up and then has her anus & vagina forcibly penetrated in order to assure an unwanted pregnancy).
*Roughly ten months later she gives birth, and within 24 hours of doing so (and despite her enraged protests), her child is forcibly taken from her.
*She is then confined & mechanically milked for roughly 16 months — forced to produce up to six times more milk than she would normally have produced for her stolen baby during the same time. This over-milking is cost efficient for the farmer, but very painful for the cow; often leading to chronic mastitis of her udder.
*This process (forced pregnancy – to stolen calf – to forced over-milking) is repeated with our milk cow at least three more times, at which point she can no longer produce enough milk to be profitable — and is then shipped off to a slaughterhouse to be murdered and ground into cheap meat.
*Her children, disturbingly enough, have it no better. If she gives birth to a healthy female calf, the child is set aside to be made pregnancy-ready as quickly as possible — essentially taking her mother’s place once her mother has been made into hamburger. If she gives birth to a healthy male calf, the child is put into a tiny pen and quickly fattened up to then be slaughtered and sold as “veal” (over 802,000 — that’s 802 THOUSAND — veal calves were murdered in the U.S. alone, alone in 2012!) … Unhealthy calves (male & female) are generally disposed of more “efficiently”, using far less “humane” methods.
*If treated with respect, cows have natural lifespans that range between 18-24 years. In the dairy branch of the meat industry, they are “lucky” to make it to age 6.
*Humans are the only species on the planet that imbibes mammary excretions past childhood, and we are of course also the only species on the planet that takes mammary “nourishment” from a species other than our own. The unnaturalness of this behavior explains why the ingestion of animal milk is a primary cause of osteoporosis, breast cancer & prostate cancer in humans. It has also been conclusively linked to heart disease, a higher rate of infection, irritable bowel syndrome & other digestive difficulties.
So … It all boils down to a series of most inconvenient Truths:
*Imbibing cow-milk products is unnatural …
*Imbibing cow-milk products is extremely unhealthy …
*Imbibing cow-milk products actively supports the cruelties inherent in the meat industry …
*Imbibing cow-milk products directly funds the immensely painful abuse — emotional as well as physical — endured by milk cows & their young …
*And imbibing cow-milk products is completely unnecessary …
In closing, there is no such thing as a “Happy Cow” on a milk farm, my Friends.
You have been lied to and manipulated long enough …
The insidious Truth is now out, and the ball is now in your court.
Please act accordingly … Thank you.
“The whole dairy business is founded upon stealing: forcibly stealing calves from their mothers and forcibly stealing mother’s milk from those calves. We have become desensitized to just how incredibly cruel and unjust this truly is.” ~ inspired by Will Tuttle
