What are our political solutions? … (01/05/10)
“Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius — and a lot of courage — to move in the opposite direction.” ~ Albert Einstein
There is much Truth in this statement, and it’s relation to modern-day politics is a clear one. And yet, even though most Americans are lucid when it comes to identifying what is “wrong” with their country (with complex & ineffective bureaucracy being one, and with involvement in violent & unjust wars being another), it is surprising that most of these Americans also believe that the solution to these problems rests with their ability to insert new & “better” politicians.
Now if this country were only a few decades old, this would be a reasonable expectation. And yet these days, after well over two hundred years of futility (regardless of which political party was “in power”), it must slowly be coming to light that it is the system itself that is broken — not the individual politicians therein; that it is the American system itself that thrives on and encourages both bureaucracy & involvement in international conflicts.
And once we awaken to this Truth, we can comprehend the deeper meaning of another wisdom from Einstein: “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
Indeed, Einstein was correct as well when he noted that “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” And nowhere is this more evident than in the enormous energies invested by the American people in “fixing” their society by voting for “better” politicians. It hasn’t worked for two centuries, and it won’t work now.
And so what is the true “political solution” to our challenges today?
PULL the PLUG on POLITICS & invest your energies in your own communities — In essence, “fix it” yourselves!
This doesn’t require a revolutionary stance. We can let the government believe that it is needed and “followed” — while we completely ignore the government and build the world we want to live in; a world based in sharing & compassion & respect & learning & humility & joy & celebration.
Rest assured, the only way such a world will come into being is if you and yours get started building it — right here, right now.
