2008 … Gifts given; gifts Received

The antenna pictured here was one of the many small gifts I received during my walk; this one given to me by a homeless man I met along the Camino. I tucked it into my backpack after receiving it, and liked to think it helped remind me to frequently pause along my route and reconnect with the ever-present Divine along The Way. The lower image shows me resting while serving as the Camino’s “Grace-full Garbageman” – where I walked slowly along the route for many days while picking up all the trash I found along the way…

“After I had given up to go, the thoughts of the journey were often attended with unusual sadness, at which times my heart was frequently turned to the Divine with inward breathings for Its heavenly support, that I might not fail to follow It boldly wheresoever It might lead me.” ~ via John Woolman

And this is what you shall do: Love the earth and the sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one who asks, stand up for the oppressed and the crazy, devote your income and labor to others, oppose all tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and compassion for all, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or at home or in any book, and then dismiss whatever insults your Soul. Do these and your very flesh shall become a great poem and have the richest fluency, not only in its words but in the silent lines of its face and in every motion of its body.” ~ via Walt Whitman
