2003 … My walk to Waipio

After being immensely disappointed by the Harmonic Concordance get together at Joan Ocean’s home (to which I had been invited while still living in Tacoma, and at which I was naively certain I would receive a clear Call as to where I was to Go and what I was to Do), my next Epiphany arrived – this time in the form of a summons to finally embark upon a true pilgrimage; to walk north all the way from Joan Ocean’s home near Kealakekua Bay to Waipio Valley on the island’s northern shore – and to do so completely alone and without using any money to assist the journey. And so that is exactly what I did, dropping off my last bit of cash and about half of my remaining possessions on the doorstep of the church at the bottom of the hill and setting off on a “faith-based” 120+ mile pilgrimage up the western coast of the Big Island, part of which traversed the desolate “moonscape” lava fields north of Kailua-Kona, and much of which followed ancient walkways along the coast – first the Fisherman’s Path and then back & forth between the King’s Trail (the Ala Loa) and an adjacent, more coastal route (the Ala Kahakai) …
