Day 134g: To be bigger than the Whole … (September 10, 2019)
“If the individual realizes his self via flows of spontaneous activity – and thus re-connects himself to the world, he ceases to feel like an isolated atom. In these moments of clarity he and the world become ONE; become integral parts of one structuralized whole. Here he has rediscovered his rightful place in the Cosmos – as an active agent thereof, and thereby his doubts concerning both himself and others and even the Meaning of Life disappear completely. He realizes in these moments that his doubts sprang from his delusion of separateness and from his ego’s tendency to either thwart or subjugate all other things living. And yet when he chooses to live neither compulsively nor automatically but spontaneously, his doubts (and thus his fears, and thereby his desires) all wane & dissipate. He is aware of himself in these instant – aware of himself as a potent and creative individual flowing within the Oneness of it All. And it is then that he recognizes that there is only one real Meaning of Life: namely, selflessness – gentleness and kindness and bravery and integrity – all of humanity’s greater virtues rolled into one; all of them together the act of living itself.” ~ via Erich Fromm
