Day 124l: Resting on The Road … (August 31, 2019)

And soon it was 10pm and the restaurant was closing (it was already pretty late when Umarah had graciously offered to pay for my dinner there) and so I headed out into the night, intending on walking on until the dawn. And yet just across the way there was a parking lot containing a series of large trucks – and one of those trucks happened to not only have a bench seat across its entire width but open cabin doors to boot! And so it was that I crawled inside, curled up comfortably, and enjoyed a wonderful few hours of sleep – somewhat literally “on the road” …

I was always exceedingly delighted with the saying of Chrysostom, The foundation of our philosophy is humility, and yet far more pleased with that of Augustine, The orator was asked about the three precepts of eloquence and answered threefold: Delivery, Delivery & Delivery. Similarly, if you were to ask me concerning the three precepts of The way of Christ, I would answer Humility, Humility & Humility … In truth, the purposeful disillusionment with our own perceived specialness is one of the most important things that can ever happen to us … For all true greatness runs a steadily level course, and is as unaspiring as the plow in the furrow. Real greatness ever wears the homeliest dress and always utters the softest of language” ~ inspired by John Calvin, Tim Hansel & Henry David Thoreau
