Day 124b: Reconnecting to the Real … (August 31, 2019)

Community, then, is an indispensable term in any discussion of the connection between people and the land and all its nonhuman residents. Indeed, a sincerely healthy community is a form that includes all the local things that are connected by the larger, ultimately mysterious form of the Creation. In speaking of Community, then, we are speaking of a complex connection not only among human beings or between humans and their homeland but also between the human economy and nature, between forest or prairie and field or orchard, and between troublesome creatures and pleasant ones. For any community to be real, all our neighbors must be included.” ~ inspired by Wendell Berry

You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is an inexcusable complicity … In the back of our minds we all already understand that something terribly wrong is happening. In truth the vast majority of our sustenance comes from needless misery. We know that if someone offers to show us a film on how our meat or milk is produced, it will be a horror film. We perhaps know more than we care to admit, shoving it all down into the dark recesses of our memory – discounted & dismissed & disavowed. When we eat farmed animals – either their murdered flesh or their abused lactations – we live, literally, on torture & terror. And increasingly – and indeed quite appropriately, that tortured flesh is becoming our own.” ~ inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson & Jonathan Safran Foer
