Day 123l: A series of Solace-full Stops … (August 30, 2019)
I walked onward late into the evening, wondering often who all these people were driving so rapidly and so late on a Labor Day Friday evening. And yet I finally rolled into Rockland and the traffic had all but subsided when I came to a divergence in the road – a choice that I had to make between Business 15 & Highway 15 proper. Both looked equally deserted at that lat hour so I intuitively chose the former, and quite soon thereafter saw a sign for Smart’s Mill Middle School, where I ended up sleeping for a few fitful hours on a bench across the way from a fleet of (unfortunately) tightly locked school buses … It was somehow too cold to sleep there for a longer period, so I ambled back to Highway 15 and continued onward into the frigid-yet-peaceful night, eventually arriving at a large Costco & Home Depot-graced shopping plaza, where I found another bench outside a nearby Tire Shop and gratefully curled up thereupon for another 3+ hours of sleep …
“In a very real sense not one a single one of us is qualified, and yet it seems that God continually chooses the most unqualified to do his greatest Work, to exude his greatest Glory. Indeed, if we were qualified, we would be tempted to think that we had done the Job ourselves alone. In truth, if we were to humbly accept our abject lack of qualification to ever on our own do any of real importance, then there would be no danger that we would ever confuse God’s work with our own, or God’s glory with our efforts … And so, to find the life we want, this is what we must become. We must keep our feet grounded so firmly on the earth that it’s like we have four legs instead of two. That way, we can remain fully in the world. And yet to do so we must stop looking at the world through our heads – what we need or want or desire or deserve. In truth, we must look through our hearts instead – what we can do and give and offer and beautify. That way, we will maintain a more correct perspective, and that way we will in-deed come to know the Divine.” ~ inspired by Madeleine L’Engle & Elizabeth Gilbert
