Powerful Salutations (February 19th) …
February 19 – Powerful Salutations: Symbolically, a handshake represents showing an enemy that you have no weapon up your sleeve. Needless to say, this is not a powerful way to express either Friendship or Kindness. So, all day today, choose to greet your friends, family and acquaintances with a hug instead of a handshake.
The hug is one of the most overlooked powerful way to express unconditional Love. We have somehow been taught that a friendly hug is “too open” or “too intimate” to be given to strangers – that we somehow have to “know one another” first before we can give an “appropriate” hug. And to that I say a plain and simple “Non-sense!” … It is the “strangers” in are lives who could most benefit from such an expression of courageous kindness. They are exactly the folks to whom we most need to be giving our hugs! And because it is still relatively “unacceptable” to do so – because there is still such a fear of intimacy in our society, a simple hug still carries enormous power. A simple hug is still a radical deed of service!
So let’s get out there and start being radical.
It doesn’t matter if you hug a friend …
… or a stranger.
It doesn’t matter if you hug to congratulate …
… or to forgive.
It doesn’t matter if you hug someone young …
… or someone older.
It doesn’t matter if you hug an ally …
… or an enemy (hint: the enemy needs it more).
It doesn’t matter if you hug a person …
… an animal …
… or a tree.
It doesn’t even matter if the person doesn’t want to be hugged …
… or if they want the hug more than you do.
It just doesn’t matter – Just get out there and do it!
We can hug our way to a Peace-full world, and it all starts right now with you …
