And then I came upon yet another lovely rest-stop, one dedicated to John 4’s deeply symbolic telling of Jesus’ well-side encounter with a Samaritan woman – a passage that conservative Christians to this day quite incorrectly use to support their contention that they and they alone are “the saved” ones (that the only ones worthy of salvation are those who “drink the living water” by worshiping Jesus himself as their God); an interpretation that directly contradicts not only the deeper meanings of this particular passage* but the more profound Truths underpinning the rest of Jesus’ three-year ministry of humble, selfless, “perfect” Love as well …

that I offer will have eternal Life.” (paraphrase of John 4:13-14)

“The secret and the sacred are ever interconnected, meaning that when the secret is not properly respected, the sacred is obscured from view. Consequently, neither reflection nor belief should ever shine too severe or aggressive a light upon the world of the Soul.” ~ John O’Donohue
*What is sadly missed by so many here is not only that Jesus speaks of “water” – a substance that was clearly used throughout his teachings to represent the selfless Kindness he repeatedly championed, but also that this particular wisdom was being gently offered to a Samaritan – to an at the time cultural enemy of himself and his Judaic compatriots.
