Day 072b: When even the shadows light The Way … (June 25, 2019)

There are all different kinds of voices calling us to all different kinds of work. The challenge is to find out which of them are reflecting the Voice of God rather than the whisperings of society, say, or the inner ego, or our self-interest. The kind of work God ever calls us to is the kind of work (A) that we feel compelled to do, (B) that our particular talents or means enable us to do, and (C) that our immediate surroundings desire to have done. If you find a work rewarding, you have presumably met requirement (A), and yet if that work does not directly & openly benefit others, the chances are are you have missed requirement (C). On the other hand, if your work does benefit others you have probably satisfied requirement (C), and yet if most of the time you feel unhappy with its outcome, the chances are you have bypassed (B) and would do well to look elsewhere for work more suited to your innate abilities. Neither a hair shirt nor a soft berth will do, for the place God calls us to is ever the place where our deepest gladness and the world’s greatest hungers meet.” ~ via Frederick Buechner
