Day 066b: Freedom for all those finer-feathered … (06/19/2019)

After awhile I passed a tented fruit tree. It had been tented to keep out the birds, and yet as I walked past I heard an unusual rustling sound therein – a sound that turned out to be a woodpecker trapped inside its netting … :O

How metaphoric – and indeed how tragic – that an act designed to make a human’s life easier and literally more fruitful would cause an equally worthy being to suffer and rapidly approach his death … 🙂 And how metaphoric as well that something as simple as throwing a net over a tree could prove to be so difficult an act to undue! And yet after many minutes of struggling with the surprisingly tensiled walls of this unintended prison, I was indeed finally able to rend an opening large enough to allow my feathered Friend to return to his equally-deserved life of freedom, and my Walk proceeded along with an additional spring in my step – the spring that comes from lessening the suffering of another; the spring that comes from making the world into just a little bit better of a place … 😀

“The fact that non-human animals are not able to use human language to communicate their feelings is not a justification for ignoring their cries for justice and freedom. Ethology actually has a lot to say about animal communication. Indeed, science has conclusively proven that non-human animals most certainly DO speak – both to each other and to us. Our own inability to understand what they are trying to convey doesn’t entitle us to confine or oppress them in any way. So please, do not let your ignorance turn you into a perpetrator. Choose to be respectful to the most vulnerable instead … Choose to Be Vegan.” ~ via Anonymous for the Voiceless
