Day 064r: The strangeness of St. Jean … (06/17/2019)
I eventually made it to this interesting little Roman chapel dedicated to “St. Jean le Froid” – interesting because I had no desire to remain there for very long (even though I was exhausted at the time, and even though it was more than clean and cozy enough to consider staying therein for the night), and interesting because to this day I can find no information (in either French or English) whatsoever to explain why this church’s particular St. John is “cold” or “of the cold” … Hmmmmmm
“I think we need the tonic of wildness. Even though we are by nature earnest to explore and learn all things, deeper at heart we require that all things be ultimately mysterious and unexplorable as well; that the sea be indefinitely wild, that landscapes remain unsurveyed and unfathomed; that God & Truth remain ever ineffable. Maybe this is why we can never have enough of nature, and maybe this is why so many can never get enough of God.” ~ inspired by Henry David Thoreau
