Day 43g: Recomprehending time & distance … (05/27/2019)

“Distance changes utterly when you traverse the world on foot. A mile becomes a long way, two miles is deeply considerable, ten miles feels absolutely whopping, and fifty miles resides at the very limits of possibility. The world, you soon realize, is enormous in a way that only you and a small community of fellow walkers truly comprehend. Planetary scale becomes your own little secret, and life takes on a tidy simplicity. In addition, time ceases to have any real meaning. When it is dark, you pause and go to bed. When it is light again you get up and walk, and everything in between is simply a series of steps in between. Living more fully in the moment, encounters are engaged more fully and beauty is appreciated more nimbly. It’s all quite wonderful, really.” ~ via Bill Bryson
