Day 05e: On refinding The Way … (04/19/19)

Many have asked me how I found my way through Europe without the use of a phone or a map. As it turned out, doing so proved to be surprisingly easy … While I didn’t uncover hardly any helpful material online related to The Way before departing, I knew that a pilgrimage tributary of the Camino de Santiago flowed just south of Stuttgart all the way to the Spanish coast. So before I left I simply looked at a map of Europe, drew a line heading southwest from Stuttgart through France to the French-Spanish border, jotted down the cities along that route, and headed out in their direction. Though it is extremely well-marked from the middle of France all the way to the Spanish coast, I didn’t expect to see any signs of the Camino for many weeks at the start of my journey, and as such was quite pleasantly surprised to see my first scallop shell sticker (the traditional identifying marker for all Camino pathways) in the town of Horb on the very first day of my pilgrimage’s re-start … 😀

This image shows the second of the aforementioned stickers that I found that second attempt at my Walk’s 5th day. And yes, someone had indeed etched a smiley face onto the green light mounted just above the same … 🙂

“One should never consent to creep after accepting the innate impulse one ever has to soar … Indeed, life is either a bold and daring adventure or it is nothing at all … As such we must set yourselves upon life’s more difficult tasks, and we will succeed if we but persevere in their fulfillment — and in that perseverance we will find a far greater joy. Remember, no effort made to attain something loving or beautiful for others is ever lost.” ~ inspired by Helen Keller
