Truth #03: Homosexual sex is NOT an especially bad or “mortal” sin…
Indeed, while conservative Christians (like Lucy & Dan in this thread) tend to make a big deal about homosexual intercourse deserving special attention because the Bible does the same – calling it an “abomination” in more than one location, it is important to note that there are dozens of similarly “mortal” sins in the Bible; many of which undeniably pertain to those same condemnatory Christians. As such, if conservative Christians are going to quote a handful of verses from the Old Testament to condemn millions of homosexual “sinners” (and thus openly champion their eternal punishment in Hell), then those same “evangelical” fundamentalists are also required to ADHERE TO THE REST of its verses themselves. Indeed, two of the New Testament’s most prominent authors affirmed this very same problem – with Paul noting clearly that, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the things written in the book of the Law” (Galatians 3:10), and James noting that, “For whoever keeps the whole law but fails even in one point has become accountable for all of it.” (James 2:10) … As such, whenever a homosexual is confronted by the supposedly “abominable” nature of his sexual misdeeds, it can be helpful to ask his or her accuser why he or she isn’t condemning the majority of women who do not bleed vaginally after losing their virginity (see Deuteronomy 22:20-21) – or all the men who have sex with menstruating women (see Leviticus 20:18) – or all disrespectful children (see Leviticus 20:19) – or all those who disobey their pastors (see Deuteronomy 17:12) – or all those who worship a different God (see Exodus 22:20) – or all those who blaspheme the name of the Lord (see Leviticus 24:10-16) – or all those who work on Saturdays (see Exodus 31:12-15) – or all those who fantasize about someone other than their wife or husband (see Deuteronomy 22:22 + Matthew 5:27-28) … For these sins and their “sinners” are far more prevalent in society than homosexuality is, and these sins are just as abhorrent in the eyes of their God!
And if the biblical term “abomination” is specifically important to them, go ahead and refer them to Proverbs 6:16-19, which lists quite a few of these sins as well – among them the arrogant judgment of others (“haughty eyes”), the consumption of animals (“hands that shed innocent blood”), those who justify war (“feet that make haste to run to evil”), those who gossip behind others’ backs (“a false witness who breathes out lies”), and those who publicly criticize the sins of fellow Christians (“one who sows discord among brothers”) … Indeed, Proverbs 16:5 on its own notes that “Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord”, and as such – when all these verses are taken together – it becomes clear that conservative Christian accusers are just as guilty of committing “abominations” as any lustful gay man or woman might ever be! … Most importantly of all, such selective condemnation – even if accurate – is as bigoted as it is hypocritical, and needs to be called out as such. It has nothing at all to do with the humble, caring Way of Christ (see Matthew 18:3-4 + John 13:15-17 + John 13:34-35) and it is a service to point out the same.
