Misleading Myth #14 … “But I only eat humanely slaughtered meat” (07/14/14)
Without getting worked up about this one, let’s just step back and take a neutral, unbiased look at the basic definitions of the words involved here.
HUMANE has been generally found to mean “characterized by tenderness and compassion, especially for those who are suffering or in distress”.
SLAUGHTER is recognized to mean “to kill another being in a violent or brutal manner”.
How about we try another word — OXYMORON, which describes “a term where two or more incongruous terms are combined to create an implied contradiction” … For example: “humane slaughter”.
*You see, no matter how “humanely” farmed animals are raised, they still suffer immensely — both physically as well as emotionally — throughout their drastically shortened lives.
*You see, it’s not HOW we use animals that is the salient point, but rather that we are using them AT ALL.
*You see, “cage-free” & “free-range” & “grass fed” & “humane” are distractions from the ultimate Truth: sentient beings are being imprisoned, enslaved and ultimately murdered solely because they are not powerful enough to stop us from doing so.
*You see, it is no more possible to “respect” farmed animals than it was for a slave owner to “respect” his slaves — or for the concentration camp guard who had been kind to the Jews under his command to “respect” them while he thereafter led them to the gas chamber.
*You see, there really is no such thing as “humane slaughter” — just like there is no such thing as “humane rape”, or “humane child abuse”, or “humane domestic violence”.
*You see, if the animals’ treatment from beginning to end were truly “humane”, then you would have no problems if your dog or cat or horse were treated the same way. And If the animals’ treatment from beginning to end were truly “humane”, then you would have no qualms about trading places with them yourself. So, WOULD YOU subject your pet to those conditions? WOULD YOU trade places? Of course you wouldn’t!
It all really does boil down to a question most poignant (and one that surely by now has an answer most obvious) — a question that it is critical for you to ask yourself, and then sincerely answer:
Why are you continuing to look for the “right way” to do the wrong thing?
So, my “cruelty free” meat-eating Friends … NOW do you SEE?
