Misleading Myth #11 … “But plants have feelings too” (07/09/14)
[ummm … seriously?!?!]
First of all, plants have no central nervous systems, no limbic systems and no brains. Yes, there is new research showing that plants can sense entrants into their immediate environment and REACT to the same, and yet this is NOT evidence for self-awareness, this is NOT evidence for the ability to experience pain or fear or suffering, and this is NOT evidence of plants being sentient in any manner similar to our cousins in the animal kingdom.
Secondly, even IF this were the case, the meat production necessary to satisfy the dietary desires of even the most modest of meat-eaters “murders” FAR more plants every day than any vegan lifestyle could hope to … So IF you are truly concerned about the welfare of plants (really?), veganism — once again — is the Way to go.
P.S. Here’s an idea — If you really feel that the suffering vegans inflict on plants is a viable reason for eating meat, how about taking on the following simple challenge: You watch a two-hour video showing exactly what goes on in a slaughterhouse on any given day, and I’ll watch a two-hour video of a vegetable harvest … Deal?
