Day 083q: Why I go to the desert … (July 06, 2019)

For me, exploration & adventure are always fully communal ventures. I do not go to the desert to take pictures or collect plants or make a map or more deeply meditate; for such things are by nature self-absorbed and as such ever incidental. No, I go to the desert to find peace – peace in willingly transcending the omnipresent hardships there, yes, and first & foremost peace from immersing myself caringly in the company of the fellow pilgrims & desert peoples I meet there. I do set goals for myself on most of these journeys, if for no other reason to help motivate me to continue past the trials & hardships, and yet the goal is never my primary motivation. Rather, it is the way I choose to walk – and of course the way I choose to interact with others – that matters.” ~ inspired by Wilfred Thesiger
