Day 084c: Until every thought is free … (July 07, 2019)

Until every soul is freely permitted – and indeed encouraged – to investigate every book and every creed and every dogma on its own merits (or lack thereof), the world cannot be truly free. In truth, humankind will remain enslaved until there is mental grandeur enough to allow each man & women to have his or her own thought and say. And this earth will become a paradise only when all of humanity can, without fear or trembling, upon all these greater questions differ, while simultaneously grasping each other’s hands as respected friends. It is maddening to me that a difference of opinion upon subjects about which we know nothing with any certainty should inspire us to hate and persecute and even murder each other. Why any difference of opinion related to predestination or the trinity or even the existence of God Itself should make people denounce and imprison and burn each other seems beyond the comprehension of any decent man. Surely the nonbeliever has not in any way tangibly injured or even mildly insulted our own personal Godhead, and surely he or she is just as human as we; just as capable of joy and pain and fear and courage, and as such just as entitled to all the most fundamental rights of justice and equality and fairness. As such would it not be far better – and in truth far more pleasing to any deity – for believers to treat their nonbelieving compatriots at least as well as they should treat him or her?” ~ via Robert G. Ingersoll
